What is a Zipped File? It is a Compressed file. Files and Folders are Compressed to save space.
If you download a File and it has this ICON - it is Zipped or compressed and you need to Un-Zip it to access the files.
Files and Folders will have the Zip logo and Zip file extension.
In the past, you needed third-party programs like WinZip, WinRar or 7-Zip to unzip files in Windows. But Windows 10 lets you zip and unzip any file you want just by right-clicking or just using a special tab on File Explorer:
After you download a Zip file go to your downloads folder and Right Click on the Zipped file. There should be an Extract All option in the pop up menu (as shown below) or just by selecting the file a special tab opens in File Explorer as shown above. Click on Extract All.
Click on Extract All and this should open:
Click on Extract and a new UN-Zipped Folder will be created which will contain all the files that were compressed.
To Zip or Compress a File just right click on it and Send To > Compressed (Zipped) Folder, as show below.
7-Zip is recommend as it has many more useful features like file encryption and it is free.

When you first open 7-Zip this is the basic menu you will see:
The first step is to select the file(s) or folder you want to compress
Here I have selected Three files.
After you select the file(s) or folder you want to compress click on ADD.
Shown above are the default settings.
The first item you should check or change is the Name of your new Archive and the Archive Format. The Format should be set to ZIP. The only other two settings you should change is the Compression Level and Compression method, as shown below:
These settings will give you the highest compression results. Click OK and you will find a FILES.ZIP in your folder where you started.
Another way to start is just Right Click on the file or folder you want to compress and in the pop up menu select 7-zip and then ADD To Archive.
To compress and encrypt (password protect) a file select these settings for best results:
Notice that the Archive Format is 7z NOT zip and the Encryption method is AES-256
